Girls get out on the oval for Hounds

23 Feb 2017 by Mick Seager

The Hounds are preparing to join the SANFL junior girls’ league and enter at least one team in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 competitions.
Hectorville secretary Craig Smith said the club wanted to provide girls with an opportunity to play football from a young age.
“We have seen the club grow from three or four teams five years ago to having teams in every grade, so this is the next stage of progression for us,” Mr Smith said.
“There has been a massive amount of sisters coming out to watch their brothers at training, but there hasn’t been anything for them to participate in. We are trying to create a family-friendly environment where everyone is included.”
The club’s aim was to provide a platform for girls who were aspiring to make a career out of Australian rules football following the establishment of SANFL and AFL women’s competitions this year.
“We want them to enjoy the game and develop their skills so they can move into bigger and better things if they choose,” Mr Smith said.
Club registrations for this year’s girls’ competition are yet to close, but the SANFL already has more than 40 teams from 28 clubs, up from 16 teams from 13 clubs last season. The league’s junior competition manager, Geoff Riddle, said it was an exciting time for all girls interested in grassroots football.
“Overall participation continues to rise every day,” Mr Riddle said. “With the many opportunities now available to young women, there’s no better time to get involved.”
Emily McCormack, 14, is gearing up to play with Hectorville and is pleased the club finally has a girls’ team.
“I’ve always been interested in playing, but back then there wasn’t really any pathway for me,” the midfielder said. “Now that it’s something I can do, playing AFL is something I will consider.”

Walkerville, Glenunga and Modbury are among nearby clubs to field female sides. Hectorville is hosting a come and try clinic for girls at its Fisher St oval on Wednesday, March 8. For more information, phone Mr Smith on 0457 838 302.
